An Evening on the Nakba in the Youth Club

Monday 19 May 2008

On Thursday, May 15, 2008, to mark the 60th anniversary of the Nakba (Catastrophe), the Youth Club (Nadi as-Shabibah / Moadon Noar) hosted an evening of film and discussion featuring the documentary "Yom Ilak, Yom Aleik: Jerusalem 1948 - Palestinian Refugees from Jerusalem, 1948; Heritage, Eviction & Hopes", a film by BADIL Resource Center for Palestinian Residency & Refugee Rights, Bethlehem. After the screening, we heard a fascinating lecture by Rayek Rizek on the Nakba: an historical overview, events leading up to the Nakba, what happened to the Palestinian people, and how all this relates to what we saw in the film. Particular emphasis was given to the refugee problem and the right of return, along with a look at the future in terms of the challenges and the possible solutions.

Attendance was impressive: 22 young people from sixth grade through twelfth grade.

Our thanks to Rayek Rizek for his presentation; to Dyana Shalufi for organizing the evening and the film; and to Naief Abbas for the photography
