Rabin memorial event at the School

Monday 9 November 2015

On Tuesday 3rd November the Primary school of Wahat al-Salam-Neve Shalom organized a memorial activity commemorating the 20th anniversary of the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. The event is commemorated in all Israeli schools. Due to Rabin’s leadership during the 1990s peace effort, the event is associated with the dream for a peaceful resolution of the conflict between the two peoples.

This year, the event was commemorated in the Eisenberg Auditorium according to a program prepared by the 6th grade class. The audience included parents and families, as well as the entire school. The pupils voiced messages of hope and peace, spoke about the meaning of democracy, gave many quotations by Yitzhak Rabin and narrated some of the events leading up to the assassination. The students spoke in both Hebrew and Arabic, though sometimes the Arabic was spoken by a Jewish pupil and the Hebrew was spoken by an Arabic pupil. The children read out their own demands for peace, such as “We the students of Wahat al-Salam – Neve Shalom School call on everyone to strive for human unity, to advance tolerance and understanding, and to end to wars and violence.” The children also sang and performed some well-known peace songs.

The backdrop to the stage included picket signs calling for peace and a slideshow presentation featuring the spoken words, in the two languages.
