“The Honey Path” project of the Primary School

Wednesday 11 December 2019

“The Honey Path” project is part of the Primary School’s special supplementary program, which gives 5th and 6th grade students the opportunity to choose between three different educational activities. One of them is Ziv Elyashiv’s beekeeping project, where the children learn about the importance of bees in our ecosystem and at the same time broaden their knowledge of the environment.

Since October 2019, students aged 11 and 12 have been meeting with Ziv weekly to learn about bees, honey and how to behave around the bees to avoid getting stung and without invading the bee’s life. In addition to classroom sessions, Ziv shows the students how to take care of the beehives. The children wear protective suits and have learned what to do if they are stung.

One part of the project is to teach the kids how to save the bees and protect them when they first set up their colonies.

The students worked together with Ziv moving a group of bees which built their hive in an exposed area. By first moving the hive with the queen bee, the rest of the bees follow.

The students assisting in the project are excited about their work with the bees. When Ziv quizzes them about their knowledge, they are eager to show how much they have learned about how the bees live and produce honey.

“The Honey Path” is a valuable educational project that not only teaches the children about bees and pollination, but helps them to understand concepts of biodiversity and ecosystems. The children obtain first-hand knowledge of our essential role in preserving the biosphere.

Putting the bees In a box to move them to their new home

Ziv Elyashiv is a graduate of a School for Peace change agents course. Earlier this year, he made a presentation on his work with bees in Berlin together with a Palestinian partner, Rajai Hameed, which can be seen on Youtube.
