In the Village

Wednesday 21 September 2022

Security: Following the latest attacks on the village, including the arson attacks on the School for Peace and the office building at the entrance, WASNS was in need of a drastic improvement to security. These steps were critical in light of new insurance company requirements (following attacks on village property) as well as providing security for village members, students and guests. With the immediate support of the British Friends, we were able to change the entrance gate, hire a security company that provides night guards, and install security cameras around the village, especially near the institutional buildings that were the targets of the most recent arson attacks and break-ins.

The local council was extremely helpful to us in getting this project off the ground, especially the security team in the council. Nonetheless, this was a complex project that took nine months to complete. Rita Boulos, Secretary of the Municipal Society: “We hope that these steps will greatly increase the security of the village as a whole as well as our members’ individual security.”

New administrative manager:
Dudu Amar is the new administrative manager of the Municipal Society. He will work closely with the board and with Rita to ensure their decisions are carried out.

The Municipal Society has been working, since its election, on developing the community. The corona virus slowed down those efforts, but the first part of those plans – extending the village – is nearing completion as young families finish building their houses and move into the community. In another step, involving an effort that has been ongoing for year, the village submitted a request to change the mandatory map and regulations for building in the village. Among other things, this will enable members to expand their houses. Once the request is submitted, it is posted for a month for feedback, and then it will receive final approval from the local council building and planning committee.

The Municipal Society and Educational Association have begun discussions on renewing the volunteer program. This program was important in the past to building strong ties between young people and the village. To do so will require ensuring they have proper housing and a proper framework, including the involvement of village members.

Toast to the new year: The Municipal Society invited the office staff to toast in the Jewish new year. Rita Boulos: “We held it in the room that was restored after the last arson attack. It was really beautiful. And we wish all of us, Jewish or not, a year of peace and happiness. Now more than ever.”
