International Women’s Day in the Village

International Women’s Day is a special occasion in Wahat al Salam/Neve Shalom. The Spiritual Center hosted an evening event and some 50 women attended. The subject: women’s humor. It turns out that women are often very funny, and women comedians know how to make us laugh. We had two performers to entertain us: Noam Shuster, who was born in the village and whose US tour was recently featured in the New Yorker and in a short documentary (watch on YouTube ), and the actress Khawlah Hag-Debsey, who is also a village member and who is the first Arab woman to be appointed to the management of an Israeli theater (the Nazareth Fringe Academy) . The two had all the women laughing at themselves and at situations that occur in daily village life. The l good humor continued into the evening as food was shared.

Speakers reminded the participants that this is a great time for women in Wahat al Salam/Neve Shalom. Two women – Rita and Ariela – head the two boards, municipal and educational, Samah head Communication and Development and we now have a younger woman heading the Spiritual Center. Our hope is that the next generation of women in the village is already planning to step into leading roles in the future.
