"KAHANE LIVES"

Thursday 5 June 2014

Spotted yesterday (but already wiped clean): someone had daubed the words "Kahane Lives" in Hebrew on the road sign to our village, as well as on the school bus shelter. Meir Kahane was the leader of an outlawed right-wing movement in Israel, who continues to inspire racists and extremists today.

Or maybe they are not so extreme? Polls published in recent years
(1), (2), (3) reveal a disturbing trend towards racist views in Israeli society. Among the statistics: almost half of Jewish Israeli highschoolers are against equal rights for Palestinian citizens of Israel, 46% of all Jewish Israelis would not want to share an apartment building with Arabs, about a third think that that they should be denied voting rights, while 58% agree that Israel practices "apartheid" policies towards Palestinians in the West Bank.

So is Kahane alive? Sure, just like Elvis.
