Mai Shbeta at the World Economic Forum in Davos

The British Council, as part of its Global Changemaker program, has selected young WAS-NS member Mai Shbeta as one of 5 international representatives at the World Economic Forum in Davos, which is about to begin. Mai has already reached Davos.

“Global Changemakers is a British Council programme which creates and supports a global network of young community activists and social entrepreneurs. The programme involves a series of high level international events which bring together young leaders aged 16-25 from around the world and connects them to global decision makers.

Since the creation of the Global Changemakers programme in 2007, Israelis have participated in every international event. We look for dynamic young leaders who have made an impact on their communities and who the British Council identifies as having great potential for creating positive change in society.

2011 World Economic Forum

Mai Shbeta (see below) has been selected to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2011. Mai is one of five Global Changemakers who will participate in plenary sessions about “Shared Norms for the New Reality” reflecting the foremost concern of many leaders today – that we all must come to terms with living in a world that is becoming increasingly complex and interconnected and, at the same time, experiencing an erosion of common values and principles.”

The Famous Five: Davos 2011

So you must all be wondering, which “Famous Five” are representing Global Changemakers at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos?
Mai Shbeta (Israel)

Mai lives in a Peace Village called “The Oasis of Peace” (Neve Shalom-Wahat al Salem in Hebrew and Arabic), which is the only place in Israel where Palestinians and Jews choose to live together as a community. Mai’s father is a Palestinian Muslim and her mother is a Jew. Her activism focuses on fostering peace in the Middle East. She has attended numerous peace camps as a participant and a facilitator and has participated in and lead peace dialogues across Israel. Mai feels that since she was a child, her mission in life has been to promote peace because no one in the entire world can tell her that peace is not possible – she sees her family as living proof that it is. Mai has just begun her first year of legal studies and is planning to study International Relations as a second degree before becoming a human rights lawyer.
