WAS-NS members receive Italian peace prize
Tuesday 3 June 2008

On May 19, 2008, Boaz Kitain, as Chair of the Association of Educational Institutions and Eyas Shbeta, as Manager of the Municipal Society, travelled to the Castel del Monte, near the city of Andria, in Bari, Italy. There they received on behalf of WAS-NS the 2008 Frederick II Peace Prize, an international prize awarded to individuals or groups who devote their energies to human welfare and diffuse the culture of peace.
The 2008 prize was shared by Archbishop Elias Chacour, and a special award was given to Fr. Paolo Latorre, in recognition for his mission in Kenya.
Boaz and Eyas were accompanied on their visit to Italy by Benedetto Scalabrini of the Italian Friends of Neve Shalom - Wahat al-Salam. In Andria, they began with a tour of the area. In the evening, at a reception in the town hall, they were greeted by Mayor Vincenzo Zaccaro and the town’s civic and religious leaders.
The following day, they participated in activities that were part of a special week for Palestine / Israel. They visited the Instituto Professionale per i Servizi Sociali “G. Colasanto” secondary school to see an exhibition of paintings by students on the theme “peace and dialogue among peoples”. At a public hall, they took part in a panel on the situation in the Middle East.
The main event took place the same evening in the Castel del Monte, which is located just outside the city of Andria. In the programme were a concert of classic music and a slideshow from Wahat al-Salam - Neve Shalom. Speeches were given by Boaz, Eyas, and the other prize recipients and the prizes were awarded. A festive meal followed.
The award ceremony received wide media attention. Boaz and Eyas were interviewed for Rai 3 TV, and later, in Milan, by Radio Popolare. The visit was also a wonderful opportunity to renew connections and conduct meetings in support of the Italian Friends of Neve Shalom - Wahat al-Salam.
