Event in honor of the International Women’s Day in the village
On Thursday, March 14, The village (including the WAS-NS Municipal Society and the association for its educational institutions) conducted a well attended evening around International Women’s Day.
The event began with a special youth tour of the Oasis Art Gallery’s current exhibition, "She’s Gone / Violence Against Women". It continued upstairs in the Fred Segal Peace and Friendship Library.
Fair trade Items like baskets and traditional embroidered accessories made by asylum seekers and women in the West Bank and Gaza were sold and the catering was done by single Arab women from Lod, as part of a women’s project of AWC Na’am.
Municipal Society chair Anwar Dawood spoke for the community on the importance of the struggle against the prevalence of murder of women and the necessity that men and women will work together to overcome many current instances of injustice, including incitement and violence against Palestinians.
After that, by pre-arrangement, a number of veteran community member women spoke about a few younger women who have become feminist activists and achieved success in their respective professions.
Ariella Bairey Ben Yishai spoke about Nadine Nashef - a photographer, translator and activist for refugees.
Michal Zak told about Nur Najjar, who returned to the village with her family and is now an early childhood educator in the nursery school.
Reem Nashef spoke of Tali Sonnenschein - a social worker and activist for violence against children and at-risk children.
Dyana Shaloufi Rizek talked about Mai Shbeta and her activism for women and peace around the world.
Evi Guggenheim Shbeta spoke about Ranin Boulos who began as an actress in Sesame Street and is today an anchor in Israel’s channel I24 News in Arabic.
This empowering feminist evening concluded with a standup comedy show by Noam Shuster-Eliassi, who made us laugh about the history of the community, her childhood experiences in the village and where we are today.
The entire evening was moving and enjoyable evening, especially since the audience had so many young people and newcomers to the village.
Happy Women’s Day to all!
