Wahat al-Salam – Neve Shalom (WAS-NS) is a village of Palestinian and Jewish citizens of Israel dedicated to building justice, peace and equality in the country and the region. Situated equidistant from Jerusalem and Tel Aviv-Jaffa, the community was established in 1970 by Fr. Bruno Hussar on land of the Latrun Monastery. It is a model of equality, mutual respect and partnership that challenges existing patterns of racism and discrimination as well as the continued conflict. The community has established educational institutions based on its ideals and conducts activities focused on social and political change. Many of the village members work in peace, justice and reconciliation projects. It has a population of 70 families (2019 )and will grow to 150 families.

In an apparent protest against the decision to evacuate an Israeli "outpost" settlement, thugs crept into the village during the night, slashing tires of many cars, and spray painting right-wing and anti-Arab slogans on cars and buildings.
The message on the school door (see attached photos) says "Hi from Havat Gilad" (one of the "outpost" settlements) and "Death to the Arabs". Another message at the school says "Revenge". A message on one of the cars said "Hi from Ulpana" (the outpost (...)

My Bruno
2 December 2008, by Abdessalam Najjar
I first met Bruno in a dialogue encounter session for Jewish and Arab students, at the home of Reuven Moscovitz, a teacher who had joined the group. This was in Rehovot, south of Tel Aviv.
At Reuven’s invitation, Bruno came to the meeting with Anne Le Meignen, to explain his idea about founding a Jewish-Arab community called Neve Shalom, and to recruit more people to join the project. The whole thing felt very strange to me. Bruno’s ideas were not very clear. They lacked a practical (...)
