Blindness is contagious
Friday 24 November 2006, by

Blindness is contagious
evidently
across the generations.
It’s uncanny.
Hardening of the heart,
likewise.
But which is the
symptom, and which
the disease?
We stand with our boot
on a mother’s face
while her baby ages to nowhere
and we are not moved.
Or are we?
Hard to tell.
We buy tickets
to Greece
or Provence.
As the woman weeps tears
dry as the beloved hills,
her baby grows a long
gray
beard
and our foot prints its sole
on our sister’s face,
yet another generation’s worth.
Is the problem that we
do not see because
we do not care
or that we
do not care because
we
do
not
see?
