Recent film screenings at the Spiritual Centre

Monday 16 September 2019

In the framework of the Cinema in the Community program, we screened three films:

Write down, I Am an Arab by Ibtisam Mara’ana, which tells the fascinating story of Palestinian national poet Mahmoud Darwish. His poetry shaped the Palestinian identity and helped shape whole generations for her. Darwish grew up under military rule, which prevented him freedom of movement and left him confined to the city of Haifa. In 1964, he wrote the defiant song "Write down, I am an Arab", which managed to upset the authorities. At the end of the film, a conversation was held with the director.

The Ancestral Sin by David Deri, which tells the story of development towns in Israel, as has never been told before. The filmmakers shed new light on the true motives that guided the country’s leaders and the details of the deception and coercion mechanisms that exercised on those who were, to them, less equal. After the screening, an engaging discussion took place with the director.

Born in Deir Yassin, by Neta Shoshani. The film tells the story of Deir Yassin in its various incarnations. Dror comes to Saul village to receive his mother’s medical record, who was hospitalized there from the 1950s until her death. The film also documents the role of the Jewish Irgun and Lehi fighters who perpetrated the massacre and the Hagana and youth battalions who spied on them and buried the bodies. After the film, a difficult and stormy discussion took place with the director.
