The Wahat al-Salam / Neve Shalom Garden of Rescuers Award for the Year (2023)
We are seeking nominations for the annual award for persons or organizations who either today or in the past have acted to support or to save the lives of others.
About the Garden of Rescuers
Every year since 2015, in the tradition of the European Day of the Righteous, we have been organizing an annual event to show appreciation for persons or organizations around the world that work to support and save the lives of others.
The Rescuers’ Garden in Wahat al-Salam / Neve Shalom is one among a global network of such gardens working in collaboration with the Gariwo organization in Italy. It is open to all and affords the opportunity to highlight heroes and heroines whose stories we wish to memorialize.
The Garden has a wonderful potential to stimulate conversation, to educate and inspire. To read more, including the list of past award recipiants, please see https://www.wasns.org/-the-garden-of-rescuers-
Criteria for the award
Individuals, groups or organizations without respect to place, religion or gender that share some of the following characteristics:
• Have performed acts of rescue and resistance to crimes against humanity such as massacres, persecution, deportation, or discrimination.
• Have acted to save the lives of others even at great personal risk.
• Have shown the ability to see reality independently from the mainstream view which may have stood in opposition to their own.
• Have performed exemplary or heroic acts that show the taking of responsibility, from which we can learn.
Notwithstanding the award’s universality, we place special emphasis on Palestinians who saved Jews and on Jews who saved Palestinians. This year, we will emphasize actions in our region, including actions on the ground that symbolize resistance in a practical way to injustices and that promote human values.
The purpose of this token of appreciation is to give a voice and in what way to persons whose stories that the general society usually silences.
